I believe Buckinghamshire still has the blanket test, and my local area has it optional. I saw kids in floods of tears over it when I helped out there a couple of years ago, especially as they'd just changed the rules here as well so that if you sat it and didn't pass, you wouldn't be guaranteed a place at any of the secondary schools in the district. It was so stupid.
