Handfasting and stuff!

Not knowing what i was going to wear till half an hour before we left i decided on a dress i had bought for a friends 40th bithday party a couple of years ago, as it kinda went with the theme for the wedding ... and it was a little big so that made me happy :D My daughter wore the beautiful dress she bought herself last Christmas in Debenhams (£90 in the sale just before, ouch), it's a deep green and is so her colour and hubby went for smart trousers and shirt.

Well, after wondering if we would ever get there, having got stuck in road works five times on the motorways and then the horrendous traffic going into Wokingham where the ceremony was held we finally arrived at 4.30pm on the dot ... only to find the bride was running very late due to the various things including the traffic and so it didn't start till 5.15pm.

We sat next to the only other people we knew, three of my 'Adam Ant' friends (so many couldn't make it because of it being on a Thursday, so far to travel and being so near Christmas) and awaited the arrival of the bride.

Knowing that she studies fashion at Uni i knew whatever she wore would be stunning and self designed and made. Here dress was a very 50's style, below knee and halterneck and the pattern had chunks of leopard print in it and petticoats, she looked absolutely stunning and the groom was dressed kinda like a 40's gangster.

I have never been to anything like it before, the bride is a practicing Pagan, but it was her husband to be who insisted on the 'full works' as she was just going to go for a simple ceremony. It involved welcoming all 4 elements into the room and then cleansing them with them and them saying how they met, reading love letters they had read to each other and the vows, being bound together and finally jumping over the broomstick (which had a proper name but i can't remember it).

It was the most beautiful wedding ceremony i have ever been to and I'm so happy we went. We had to leave the reception by 9.30 to get home for midnight 'cos hubby had to work this morning, but it was so Worth the long journey. The reception food was different too, mashed potato to help yourselves too with lots of toppings to go with it, peppers, cheese, coleslaw, mushrooms ... the list goes on and on ... and for desert there were brownies and cupcake and cornflake cakes and piles and piles of sweeties! The theme was 40's and 50's and they even had a live band playing such stuff, it was brilliant.

We tried to disown hubby as he changed into jeans and denim shirt ... fine, with very blue suede shoes ... okay and an 'ELVIS' wig ... oh the shame!

Journey home seemed to take forever! Strangely there were two radio shows on one after the other on the way back that were 40's and 50's music ... how odd is that! Got in just after midnight, knackered and frozen. It was between 0 deg and -2 degrees outside all the way home and the heating had gone off by the time we reached home so the house wasn't much warmer ... went to bed wrapped in my dressing gown as well as the duvet and slept like a log for the first time in yonks!

Shame it was all over so fast ...

Oh, and why is it strapless bras are fine when you put them on, fine for a few hours then suddenly try and kill you???

Sounds like fun!

And strapless bras do that just because they can. If I can get away with it, I use a bra with clear plastic straps instead as it is much more comfortable (even if the plastic straps start to stick to you a bit after a few hours)

It was lots of fun and so romantic, just gorgeous. Never seen anything like it before in my life and am so happy we took the time to drive such a long way to go for it.

I hate bra's ... shame i can't go braless, lol!

[identity profile] etmuse.livejournal.com 2008-12-12 02:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, bras seem like an exciting prospect when you are about 10, but I'd love to go back to a time when I didn't need one (or at least to a time where I could just about get away without one)

[identity profile] missthingsplace.livejournal.com 2008-12-12 02:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah ... you can't wait to get one 'cos it means your not a kid anymore then you wish you didn't have to wear one! I remember being able to go braless before i had the kids ... i blame them, lol!

The word you're looking for (for the broom)is besom (I think). And the logical reason about strapless bras is that, to stay on, they maintain a little pressure on you, but even a little pressure over a long period of time begins to get uncomfortable. The illogical reason, of course, is that strapless bras wish to take over the world. *nods*

It sounds like it was a beautiful ceremony! And the thing with the two radio shows..spooky!

[identity profile] missthingsplace.livejournal.com 2008-12-12 02:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, that was the word, thank you!!!

Yes, i agree with the illogical reason, strapless bra's are trying to take over the world ...

It was gorgeous! It was very spooky too say the least ... i need more 50's stuff on my ipod now ...

[identity profile] isarae.livejournal.com 2008-12-12 04:02 pm (UTC)(link)
No problem. It was in my head as soon as I read it..

Can I beg to differ and say that I actually have a strapless bra that's comfortable?

[identity profile] missthingsplace.livejournal.com 2008-12-12 04:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think i've ever had one that stayed comfortable ...

Strapless bras are a pain in the ass, well more like a pain in the boobs, but still. At least at times I'm lucky enough to get away with no bra.

It sounds like you had a fantastic time at the ceremony :)

Unless i have a boob job not a hope in hell of going braless, lol!

I had a brilliant time, thank you :D

What a lovely ceremony!!!

And yeah....strapless bras and I do not mix!!! LOL!

[identity profile] missthingsplace.livejournal.com 2008-12-12 03:06 pm (UTC)(link)
It was gorgeous!

I hate them and only wear when needed!!!

Thank you :D

Oh this was lovely! Thank you for sharing!!!!!

Strappless bras = clearly invented by a man.

Yep -- braless is not an option - thank GOD for sports bras!

[identity profile] missthingsplace.livejournal.com 2008-12-12 03:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I so wish we had done something like that, it was just gorgeous ... i've never had the urge to cry at a wedding till yesterday!

Yep, they must have been invented by a man!

*looks down at wonderbra type bra she is wearing and wonders why ... i clearly don't need one, lol*

sounds lovely - I have been to one pagan festival myself, which was also very enjoyable, but not a handfasting.

As for strapless bras - gravity laughs at the mere concept of me trying one of those!!

It was gorgeous!

The one i have is from M&S and it resembles scaffolding, lol!

It was indeed ... such a great way to marry! The food was great, so little preperation needed, always a good thing for something like that.

Strapless bras are indeed evil! Yep, kids have that effect on bodies ...

the ceremony sounds lovely..and the reception a ton of fun. As for strapless bras, I personally find one of two things happen; either they turn into boa contrrictors OR decide they would rather be a belt! Neither is a brilliant option. What DID ladies do in the 50's I wonder?

[identity profile] missthingsplace.livejournal.com 2008-12-13 03:02 pm (UTC)(link)
It was lovely :)

Mine always turn into constrictors ... Lots of dresses were boned in the 50's i imagine they didn't need a bra.

[identity profile] iantos-first.livejournal.com 2008-12-13 04:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah, that's right. I bet THAT was comfy as well. The things we do for fashion!

[identity profile] missthingsplace.livejournal.com 2008-12-13 04:54 pm (UTC)(link)
More comfy than strapless bra's ... i've worn some in my time!

Finally taking Teach's suggestion and reading you again, Though I am months late, had to tell you how wonderful it is. Also I am so happy that you wrote about the handfasting. So beautifful and I've never been to one. I studied the rite along with all my other study of The Way. You are one of lucky to have experienced one. Sounding soppy, but every day in ths fandom really is a gift for all that is shared. Eros

It was the best 'wedding' i have ever been to, i certainly felt more emotional during it than at any conventional wedding. We had to drive a long way and couldn't stay long after but it was so worth it.

I hope you are enjoying my fics too ...
