Miracle Day - Finale - CONTAINS SPOILERS
Sep. 10th, 2011 09:19 pmSo ... it's over!
These are only my thoughts on the matter, the episode, the whole thing. Whether you agree with me or not is beside the point. I am not going to argue with anyone about it.
First, i did not hate Torchwood Miracle Day. As i have said before though i couldn't see it as Torchwood, it was missing something ... mostly the BBC budget and Welshness we have come to love. I enjoyed it for what it was.
So, Jack's immortal blood was resonsible for The Blessing becoming active. Not sure how the three families came to this revilation. I mean, how did all the number crunching when the world grew up come to the conclusion that they needed the blood of an immotal? This bit doesn't make much sense. To me anyways. It did explain why they were trying to kill Jack though, to stop him reversing the effect.
Too many main characters died. Can i say I'm surprised? Nope! But who do we get left with from the new characters? Rex! I didn't particually like him, so he survives and is now immortal. I'm guessing RTD thought this would be good, kill off the nice people and make the one person - and i know more than a few feel the same way - people dislike the same as Jack.
I don't know about twists though. Most of the final episode was predictable. It was obvious that Jack's mortal blood was bad for The Blessing and just as obvious that once it was closed Jack would revert to being immortal. And the same with Rex, he died with Jack's blood in his body, it didn't take a genius to work out that he'd end up with the same 'fate'as Jack.
What i really don't like is the implication that this could have a sequel! More? I think not. This was all far too long winded. Even this episode was dragged out a little. I can't say that i will never watch it again, but my CoE DVD's are sat upon the shelf still in their shrink wrap. On the other hand this didn't have me balling my eyes out, i didn't care as much about any of the characters.
My daughters reaction was much the same as mine, but she is horrified by the idea of a sequel!
I am even more sure now that they need to do a TV series set in Wales again, pre CoE, like the radio plays - The Lost Files - i'd be in heaven. But sadly, i can't see that ever happening.
Oh well, at least it wasn't as bad as i expected it to be. That's something i guess. I have deleted the spisodes off the Sky+ box ... but i still have the DVD's, for now., at least.

I miss the fun alien catching show that used to be called Torchwood.

Date: 2011-09-11 07:20 am (UTC)I'm like you - I loved the radio plays & would love a "Tales from The Torchwood Archive" style series - in Wales with various teams involved but with Jack as the lynch pin. They could be radio plays (eg cheap/no-one would see the cast aging; in some cases badly!) How about Ianto bringing an item/document up from the archives that needs classification & Jack then reminiscing into the episode of the hour. Now that way we could see/hear some team members previously mentioned but never seen & some current characters/old favourites returning but as guest slots in a one story per episode structure but then I always was a naive fantasist!
I'm glad you enjoyed MD though, as did members of my brood at home - that's the whole reason for entertainment in the first place not to unnecessarily shock, humiliate or dis-enfranchise those purchasing what you produce!

I think the last scene was the best! The "WHAT ?" reminded me of Doctor Who.
And to Rex's new immortality: To bad for Jack that Rex is straight and isn't into men xD ...

Date: 2011-09-12 09:14 am (UTC)"Jack : It's the gap in-between, the nothingness. The space."
When they are standing on the platform, Mrs Bitch says : It is said that it reflects your own self back at you.
Gwen answered : Enough guilt to last me a lifetime. But that's okay, I'm a working mother. I don't need The Blessing to tell me that.
Jack answer is more like an answer : I've lived so many lives and now
I can see them all. Hey. Not so bad.
I think it's like for the Time Lord, the Time Vortex ... When they are looking at it, they see it all.. - Well that's how I see it.
And isn't the heart of the Tardis like that? the Time Vortex ...
They changed the way The Blessing was influencing the life. They took Jack's blood, who shouldn't be that special, but because he was influenced by the heart of Tardis, it must be on some level. The Blessing, took it as a new pattern...
They transfused Jack's blood into Rex. So in fact, Rex is a 'copy' of Jack. When the Blessing reset itself, with Jack's and Rex's sacrifice, for it, it was ... I have one person in Shanghai, and one person in Buenos Aires, they matched, so I have to 'reset' them to their initial form = IMMORTAL.
I really think, Jack's blood must be different, on some sub level particles.
I don't think it influence anything else than just the blood... Well somehow, I think it should have some impact on his daughter and grandson, but well huh ... maybe not enough.. you know to keep them save. And maybe it was more like a 'not falling ill' too much, rather than being immortal.
That's how I saw the final.
Like you said, it doesn't have much to do with Torchwood... but I watched it nevertheless. I really found it a Gwen and Rex show, rather than a Torchwood, Captain Jack Harkness Show...
