“Okay, the very first time we met you appeared out of nowhere and helped me fight off and capture a Weevil,” Jack answered. “A weevil is an alien, they came though something we have in Cardiff called a rift …”
“A rift?” Ianto butted in.
“It's like a tear in time and space and things fall through it,” Jack explained. “sometimes space junk, sometimes alien and it's Torchwoods job to monitor these events.”
“Okay, so this Weevil fell through it?” Ianto asked.
“Yeah, but there are more than one, they live in the sewers and live on … well, they live in the sewers,” Jack explained. “they rarely come to the surface but now and then one ventures out.”
“And you say I helped you?” Ianto frowned. “Why would I do that?”
“Torchwood here is Cardiff is Torchwood 3,” Jack explained. “you used to work for Torchwood 1 in London but it was destroyed and you came here looking for a job.”
“Destroyed? How?” Ianto asked.
“That's a story for another time,” Jack answered with a sad look in his eyes. “anyway, you helped me and as I carried the unconscious Weevil away you told me that you loved my coat.”
“I did? Well, I guess it's a cool coat.” Ianto admitted.
“And then you stalked me,” Jack continued with a small chuckle. “even though I kept telling you there wasn't any jobs with us. But you did prove that you could make one hell of a great cup of coffee!”
“Really?” Ianto said thoughtfully. “So, how did I finally get you to give me a job?”
“You convinced me to help you capture a Pterodactyl,” Jack answered, chuckling at the look in the younger man's face.
“You're kidding me!” Ianto gasped, sure he was being made fun of.
“Nope, the rift is in both time and space remember,” Jack answered. “Myfanway fell through from the past and how she lives at the hub.”
“Hub? A Pterodactyl?” Ianto replied. “This all sounds like something out of a science fiction book.”
“The hub is what we call our Torchwood base,” Jack explained. “and yes, that's where the dinosaur resides. When you are up to it maybe you can come and see for yourself, if you don't remember first?”
“Yep …”Ianto responded a little unsure, still not convinced it was true.
“Anyway, it was then I decided to employ you,” Jack told him. “and you became one of the team along with Owen, Toshiko and Suzie.”
“What about Gwen?” Ianto asked.
“She came to the job later,” Jack told him. “Is any of this familiar in any way?”
Ianto shook his head sadly. “Nope.”
“I think a more visual experience might help more,” Jack said, somewhat sadly. “but you were only released from hospital yesterday and I know you were told to rest so that will have to wait.”
“Visual?” Ianto asked.
“Places you know,” Jack replied. “the fake tourist office on the quay, the invisible lift and the actual hub. You can meet Myfanway, you should bring some dark chocolate with you and Janet.”
“Let me get this right, the dinosaur likes chocolate?” Ianto asked.
“Dark chocolate,” Jack clarified. “she doesn't like milk.”
“Right. And Janet? Is she another team member? A pet?” Ianto inquired.
“Janet is the Weevil you helped me catch,” Jack answered with a smile. “she lives in the cells.”
“Janet?” Ianto said with a slight laugh.
“Well, Barbara didn't seem to suit her,” Jack grinned.
Ianto nodded.
“Yep, I am meant to rest, but I feel fine, not even a headache.” Ianto told him. “just the damn frustration with the memory loss.”
“I can understand that,” Jack agreed. “how about we plan it for after Christmas?”
“Boxing Day?” Ianto asked hopefully.
“Sure,” Jack agreed. “Boxing Day, if you're sure your sister won't mind?”
“I doubt it,” Ianto told him. “I think she wants me to get my memory back as much as I do.”
“It's a date!” Jack exclaimed, then more sedately. “I mean, I don't mean an actual day … I mean …”
“I know what you mean,” Ianto told him, that red flush spreading across his face again.
“Good, good,” Jack said, “I really should be off, I gave Gwen the holiday off so I should be at the hub really.”
“That's fine,” Ianto said a little sadly. “So, Boxing Day then?”
“Yeah,” Jack agreed. “you get that rest you have been prescribed and I will see you then.”
“I'm not quite sure how that will happen with it being Christmas Day tomorrow and two excited kids in the house,” Ianto smiled. “but I will give it a go.”
“True,” Jack replied, looking at the pile of presents already under the tree. “Rhiannon has my number, call me if it all becomes too much.”
Ianto nodded as his sister entered the room and Jack got to his feet.
“I have to go,” Jack told her. “places to be, work to do.”
“So soon?” Rhiannon asked.
“Yeah, but I will be back Boxing Day to take Ianto on a memory jogging field trip.” He answered.
“Okay, I'll get your coat,” she answered, vanished out the door and returned with the item a few moments later.
“Thanks,” Jack said, taking it from her and slipping it on. “I can see myself out.”
They said their final farewells and Jack left.
“You know,” Ianto confided in his sister. “I do find myself loving that coat.”
Rhiannon chuckled. “Anything else? Anything sparked a memory?”
“Yep, when he said he had to do,” Ianto frowned. “and added “places to be, work to do I thought maybe I had heard him say something like that before.”
“That's good.” Rhiannon smiled. “maybe it's a real memory. Now, is it just me or does that man smell really good?”
“I never noticed,” Ianto replied instantly, well aware of the deep red his face instantly became.
Rhiannon, trying her best not to laugh just asked. “Are you hungry? Sandwich?”
“Yep, please,” Ianto answered, found the TV remote and turned it on to end the conversation.
